Within that year, it is necessary to apply for a resident permit, valid for 3 years, so you must visit Spain to apply for that three-year initial resident permit, which allows you and your family members to work in EU. In fact, you do not need to live in the country to maintain your Visa, but you will visit Spain to renew it.
